Ampyr Energy USA (Ampyr) is seeking Director of Interconnection and Transmission to join our growing team in North America focusing on the rapidly growing renewable energy sector. This role will work within the Development team and will be responsible for supporting business growth by systematically evaluating grid interconnection possibilities for renewable energy projects, both through greenfield campaigns and project/ pipeline acquisitions. This is a strategic position focused on the supporting development of Solar PV, hybrid (PV + BESS), and standalone BESS opportunities, with a sustained effort in evaluating opportunities and creating a differentiated project pipeline in IOU and ISO markets- CAISO, PJM, SPP, MISO, ERCOT, NYISO.

Job responsibilities will include supporting creation of market thesis in relation to regional transmission plans that can create business opportunities, thereby supporting growth plans. This person will contribute towards forming market views in support of greenfield strategies, lead interconnection screening studies in selected markets working with other development team members, manage interconnection processes through project lifecycle, and also support due diligence of project acquisitions and co-development partnerships. Successful applicants will have experience in and understanding of interconnection processes, understand basis of grid injection analyses, interconnection rules in various ISO and non ISO markets, including understanding of applicable OATT and FERC rules. Responsibilities

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Support greenfield development: review transmission system analysis, lead the identification of interconnection agencies and procedures, help lead preparation and filing interconnection requests including leading internal and external parties on preparation of technical materials, provide viability feedback to the development lead to support any financial and project approvals needed. Present and support new ideas and opportunities for new strategic endeavors.
  • Support and lead project due diligence efforts, identify existing and potential red flags for project acquisitions and existing pipeline projects.
  • Communicate project’s interconnection requirements, risks and opportunities to Project Development lead; support pipeline and risk reviews to assess project viability.
  • Manage interconnection queue positions for renewable energy projects. Review and provide technical insight through feasibility, system impact, and facilities studies. Assesses actual grid capacity in a region by reviewing and verifying technical studies performed by transmission providers.
  • Lead technical discussions with utilities/ISOs for interconnection studies and negotiate interconnection agreements.
  • Evaluate high-level cost and schedule for various grid interconnection options and provide recommendations for optimized solutions.
  • Work with grid consultants to undertake injection studies and analyze electrical grids to identify grid capacity opportunities for interconnecting new renewable energy and storage project sites.
  • Understand all interconnection requirements, processes, study phases, timelines and tariff rules for the relevant RTO/ISO.
  • Prepare and submit interconnection applications for Solar PV, PV + Battery and standalone battery storage projects.
  • Act as the technical interface with the interconnecting TSPs and ISOs for project specific matters, during development and execution phases.
  • Provide technical support to Business Development in interconnections, feasibility studies, costs, etc. for proposed projects and assist in filing grid connection applications.
  • Provide guidance on the technical aspects of grid interconnection for renewable power plants for the following project phases: development, design, construction, commissioning up to the commercial operation.

Qualifications, Education and Experience

  • BS Electrical Engineering. – Master’s Degree in Power Systems is preferred.
  • 10 years of engineering background with 7-8 years in utility scale electrical power systems. 5+ year of experience in grid interconnection integration of power producer resources in transmission level systems.
  • Experience with ISO markets- CAISO, PJM, ERCOT, MISO, SPP
  • Ability to analyze power flows, and knowledgeable in power systems engineering in distribution, transmission, substations and generation.
  • Familiarity with ISO and Transmission Owner structure. Knowledge of technical requirements of ISO and Transmission Owner, knowledge of Grid Interconnections Agreements.
  • Experienced in overall Electrical Power System engineering, experience in interconnection application. Knowledge of Grid Interconnection Studies; System Impact, Facilities, Fault, Loss, Relay Coordination.
  • Ability to coordinate all interface electrical and SCADA design with interconnecting Power Utility
  • Knowledgeable of software for power system simulations PSLF, TARA, ASPEN, DigSILENT, ETAP, NEPLAN, PROMOD etc.
  • Familiarity with NERC/FERC reliability standards, NEC, NESC IEEE and ANSI Engineering Standards.
  • Requires intimate knowledge of the energy, renewable energy market, and the ability to stay current with changing technologies, regulations, and trends influencing the continued adoption of renewable energy.
  • Deep understanding of US Power markets.
  • Strong computer skills (MS Excel, Word, Power Point).
