AMPYR Australia acquires 100% of Wellington battery project from Shell

SYDNEY, 3 February 2025 – AMPYR Australia (AMPYR) has announced it has acquired Shell Energy Australia’s (Shell) 50 percent stake in the Wellington Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) stage 1 (300 MW / 600 MWh) energy storage project. With its Wellington BESS stage 2 (100 MW / 400 MWh), AMPYR now owns 100 percent of the 1,000 MWh Wellington project.
AMPYR and Shell had been joint venture partners in the New South Wales project since October 2022. AMPYR will now accelerate development of both stages, aiming for energization of stage 1 in 2026, with stage 2 to follow in 2027. Wellington BESS stage 1 has received planning and grid approvals and is in the final stages of procurement and financing.
One of the largest BESS in the region, the Wellington BESS will contribute to improved grid reliability, enable more renewable energy generation, and lower energy costs for consumers in New South Wales.
“Reliable, cost-competitive electricity is a cornerstone of Australia’s economic growth. AMPYR’s mission is to enable Australia’s future industries to benefit from the clean energy transition,” said AMPYR CEO Alex Wonhas. “We’re grateful for Shell’s contributions to the Wellington BESS project, and we are excited about accelerating its development to bring this vital project to market.”
